In her mind, winning the war was so that the bad guys would never hurt her people again. She never thought about "What if I win? How do I make sure the people will be okay?" It was more about winning for vengeance's sake. I'm not saying that the other person was necessarily right (and many times they weren't because there were no good choices), but she never thought several steps ahead. I was hoping for much more maturation from Rin, but she kept making the same bad decisions over and over, and she NEVER listened to anyone, not even Kitai. None of the characters are actually likable, except possibly Kitai, and as much as Kuang tries to explain the behaviors because of the circumstances, it's hard to feel empathy for them. There are no benevolent gods, not even those of the Hyperions. And even if you're the apparent victor, you've also taken part in those atrocities. There are no happily-ever-afters because this is war and someone is going to end up killed, abused, starved, tortured, buried alive by other corpses, eaten, beheaded, crucified, etc. I will not reveal any spoilers because based on the reviews, many find this to be an amazing trilogy and I don't want to ruin it for anyone. My favorite of the three books ended up being the 2nd book, but this one was tough to get through as we went through battle after battle, with cruelty after cruelty not just from the enemy but also from Rin and her allies. I've mentioned before that I am not a fan of war books (okay, knowing the name of the series, I should have known better), but I really enjoyed Kuang's Babel, and this series is rated highly among my GR friends, so I decided to give it a try. Yeah, I wanted to like this more than I did, but it was honestly a slog.
